Case of the Month

A 49-year-old man presented to clinic after experiencing a blurry vision in his right eye for 1 year. He also noted an intermittent central scotoma in the right eye for 6 weeks. He was found to have 20/400 vision in the right eye and 20/20 vision in the left eye. His anterior segment examination was unremarkable with the exception of mild nuclear sclerotic cataracts.

What is the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide®?

The OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® is an interactive, educational Web site for eye care professionals and contains materials that are authored and edited by renowned experts in the field of ophthalmology.

The Web site and its content are monitored by the chief medical editor, Carmen A. Puliafito, MD, MBA, as well as 13 module editors (meet the Editorial Board). The OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® is published by Vindico Medical Education.

The OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® contains tutorials, video, online lectures, podcasts, monographs, symposia and Cases of the Month in the following areas: Allergy; Dry Eye; Infection/Inflammation; Cataract: Refractive IOLs; Cataract: Monofocal IOLs; Phacoemulsification and Other Technologies; Refractive Surgery; Glaucoma; Retinal and Macular Disease; Pain Management; Oculoplastics; Pediatric Ophthalmology; Neuro-ophthalmology; and Clinical Optics.

Tutorials provide an overview of important topics and focus on areas such as clinical features, diagnosis, risk factors, evaluation, treatment options, and patient results. Throughout each tutorial, you will be able to access images that include clinical photographs and histology. If you would like additional information on a specific topic, bibliographies are included at the conclusion of each tutorial.

Video clips of surgical techniques and clinical pearls complement tutorials for your enhanced learning.

Online lectures simulate the lecture experience. Experts in the ophthalmic community provide lectures in their respective specialty areas. The slides automatically advance along with the audio.

Podcasts are audio files featuring renowned experts in the field speaking on important topics and areas of focus such as clinical features, diagnosis, risk factors, evaluation, treatment options, and patient outcomes. Podcasts are downloadable, meaning you can listen online or take them to listen on the go through any media player.

Monographs, which include articles, figures and discussions from experts on a specific topic, are based on live symposia. They include the most important information delivered during the live presentations in a concise, easy-to-read format.

Cases of the Month are actual case studies contributed by experts in ophthalmology. They feature difficult cases or unusual treatment options and patient results, allowing you to glean clinical pearls that you can implement in your own practice.

Symposia simulate the symposia experience. Experts present and discuss on specific areas of interest. The slides automatically advance along with the audio, as if you were in attendance at the symposia.

The OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® offers a comprehensive review course through the World Wide Web to eye care professionals.

The information is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can explore the material at your own pace and convenience.

How do I access the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide®?

Anyone can access the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® homepage. However, to follow links into the content areas, you must provide an E-mail address and Password. To request access to the entire site, click on the New User button.

You will be prompted to provide your E-mail and Password on the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® homepage each time that you visit. Upon entering your information for the first time, you will be asked to complete a brief registration form.

What are the minimum PC requirements needed to access the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide®?

You will need a browser that set to enable JavaScript and style sheets. It should also be set to accept cookies.

Is there a cost to access the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® or to obtain CME?

The OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® is a free educational Web site for the ophthalmic community. There is no cost for you to access the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® or to obtain CME credits.

How do I navigate the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide®?

Once you have logged on the Web site by entering your E-mail and Password, you can view material by clicking on the navigation buttons on the left side of the screen to enter the module of your choice; by clicking on the navigation buttons on the top right side of the screen to view the learning formats; or by clicking directly on the activity you wish to view that is listed on the homepage.

How can I earn CME credits on the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide®?

Vindico Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The time that you spend on the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® will be noted for the purpose of issuing CME credit. Vindico Medical Education designates this activity for a maximum of 50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™, on an hour-by-hour basis.

After you log on to the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide®, read the CME objectives and instructions for obtaining credit. This information can be found by clicking on the CME: Earn up to 50 credits per year button that is located on the left side of the page.

Time that you spend on the OPHTHALMIC Hyperguide® is not cumulative from session to session - you must apply for CME credit at the end of each session. If you leave the Web site before applying for credit, you will not receive credit for that session. You must NOT hit refresh or resize your browser window.

Applying for credit is fast and simple. Before ending your session, select the CME: Earn up to 50 credits per year button on the left side of the page. Complete and submit the electronic registration and evaluation forms. Upon confirmation of your activity, Vindico Medical Education will award a CME certificate instantaneously through e-mail.
